NextEra Energy and Google Collaborate on Accelerating Nuclear Power Deployment

LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

Google Announces Gas-fired Broadwing Energy Project with CCS

LCG, October 23, 2025--Google announced today a first-of-its kind agreement to support a natural gas-fired power plant with carbon capture and storage (CCS). The 400-MW Broadwing Energy power project, located in Decatur, Illinois, will capture and permanently store its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. By agreeing to buy most of the power it generates, Google is helping get this new, baseload power source built and connected to the regional grid that supports our data centers.

PG&E Announces Agreements for Colossal New Solar Farms

LCG, August 15, 2008--Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) yesterday announced that it has executed two contracts for solar electricity generation totaling 800 MW of photovoltaic (PV) capacity. Construction of both solar farms is scheduled to begin in 2010.

One agreement is with Topaz Solar Farms LLC, a subsidiary of OptiSolar Inc. The 550-MW project will use thin-film, PV panels designed and manufactured by OptiSolar in California. The solar farm will be constructed in San Luis Obispo County, California and will have a footprint covering nearly 6,100 acres. The project is scheduled to start providing power to the grid in 2011 and be fully operational by 2013.

PG&E's second power purchase agreement is with High Plains Ranch II, LLC, a subsidiary of SunPower Corporation. The High Plains Ranch II project will have a design capacity of 250 MW and will be built in San Luis Obispo County, California. The project will use SunPower's proprietary crystalline PV solar cells, together with its patented SunPower Tracker solar tracking system, to improve energy capture. High Plains Ranch II is scheduled to commence delivering electricity to the grid in 2010 and be fully operational in 2012.

California passed a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) Program that requires utilities to increase their electric supply procurement of eligible renewable generating resources by one percent of load per year, with a 20 percent renewables target by the end of 2010 and a 33 percent target by the end of 2020.

On the other side of the country, last month the Florida Public Service Commission approved two solar PV projects proposed by Florida Power & Light Company (FPL). The projects include what was touted as the world's largest PV solar system. The two solar PV facilities will have a combined electric generating capacity of 35 MW. SunPower Corporation was selected by FPL to design and build the facilities that will incorporate SunPower PV panels.

In DeSoto County, Florida, a 25-MW solar PV facility will be built that includes the installation of the SunPower Tracker system that follows the sun to increase electric generation from the panels. A 10-MW project will be constructed at the Kennedy Space Center. The DeSoto project is scheduled to commence operations by December 2009, and the Kennedy Space Center is scheduled to commence operations by the first quarter of 2010.

Both Florida projects will be owned, operated and maintained by FPL. SunEdison will develop, finance, build, operate, monitor and maintain the solar farms.
