NRC Accepts Entergy's Application for New Nuclear Reactor at River Bend Station

LCG, December 11, 2008--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced yesterday that it has accepted for review a combined operating license (COL) application submitted by Entergy Operations, Inc. (EOI) to construct and operate a new nuclear reactor at the River Bend site in Louisiana. The application was submitted September 25, 2008.

EOI proposes to use the GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) design that employs passive safety features that rely upon natural forces, such as gravity, to reduce reliance on active, mechanical systems, like pumps and valves.

The existing nuclear power station includes one boiling water reactor designed by GE and has a generating capacity of 978 MW. The facility is located about 30 miles north of Baton Rouge.

EOI previously submitted an application with the NRC for a COL to add a third (ESBWR) reactor at its Grand Gulf site near Port Gibson in Claiborne County, Mississippi on February 27, 2008.

Applications to use the GEH ESBWR have been submitted to the NRC by other power companies. In November 2007, Dominion filed its application with the NRC for a COL to add a third nuclear reactor at the North Anna Power Station in Virginia. On September 3, 2008, Exelon Nuclear Texas Holdings, LLC (Exelon) filed an application with the NRC for a COL for two ESBWRs to be located in Texas and designated as Victoria County Station, Units 1 and 2. Detroit Edison also filed an application on September 18 for a COL for a new reactor at its Fermi site in Michigan.
