Funds Provided for Evaluation of 9-MW, Offshore Wind Turbine

LCG, January 29, 2009--The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) announced earlier this month that it will provide approximately $28.5 million to fund research for the an offshore, vertical-axis wind turbine with a targeted electric generating capacity of 9 MW.

The Aerogenerator is a V-shaped turbine designed to spin around a vertical axis to improve efficiency and stability in off-shore operations. The blades would rise approximately 115 feet into the air.

The goal of "Project Nova" is to develop a full-scale, pilot installation within six years. A consortium that includes, OTM Consulting, representatives from Cranfield, Strathclyde and Sheffield Universities, the Center for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture and SME Wind Power, will evaluate the feasibility of the Aerogenerator.

The ETI is a partnership between the UK government and private sector companies, currently including: BP, Caterpillar, EDF Energy, E.ON, Rolls-Royce and Shell.
