Luminant's New Coal-fired Unit Now On-line in Texas

LCG, October 20, 2009--Luminant announced yesterday that commercial operations commenced for its Sandow 5 lignite coal-fired unit facility in late September. The 581-MW unit is the first new coal unit for Texas in 17 years.

In July, the Sandow 5 unit was synchronized to the grid and produced power. However, construction delays caused after Hurricane Ike hit Texas last fall and some equipment malfunctions during initial testing led to concerns that emission standards set out in a 2007 court order would not be met, and the commercial operation date was deferred. Sandow 5 is located near Rockdale, Texas.

In 2003, a federal court consent decree allowed Alcoa to build Sandow 5 if it replaced two other coal units with higher air emissions. Luminant, previously TXU Corp, acquired the right to construct Sandow 5. Luminant operates the 545-MW Sandow 4 unit that commenced operations in 1981.

Luminant is a subsidiary of Energy Future Holdings, which is owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, TPG Capital and Goldman Sachs.
