EIA Estimates Record U.S. Electric Generating Capacity Additions in 2026, with Solar in the Lead

LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

New Mexico Solar PV Project Operational

LCG, January 26, 2011--Southern Company announced that commercial operations are underway at the Cimarron Solar Facility, a 30-MW solar photovoltaic (PV) electric generating facility in northeastern New Mexico.

The solar PV project is a venture between Southern Company and Ted Turner. First Solar, Inc., the original developer, sold the project to them in March 2010. First Solar continued to develop and build the project and will operate the project under a long-term contract. Tri-State contracted in March 2010 to purchase the power generated from the facility over a 25-year term.

Southern Company Chairman, President and CEO Tom Fanning stated, "This is a key milestone for Southern Company as we steadily incorporate more renewables into our energy portfolio. Renewables, along with new nuclear, increased energy efficiency, 21st century coal technology and additional natural gas, all will be crucial to meeting this nation's growing energy demand."

The Cimarron Solar Facility is located on a 250-acre site in Colfax County and includes approximately 500,000 PV modules, with each module measuring 2 feet by 4 feet. The PV modules employ First Solar's patented, thin film semiconductor technology.
