LCG, November 6, 2025--X-energy Reactor Company, LLC, (X-energy) and the U.S. Office of Nuclear Energy today announced the start of confirmatory irradiation testing at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to qualify X-energy’s proprietary TRISO-X fuel pebbles for commercial use in the Xe-100 Small Modular Reactor (SMR). (TRISO stands for TRi-structural ISOtropic). This is the first time that TRISO-X fuel pebbles will undergo irradiation testing in a U.S. lab, which is a critical step in meeting requirements set forth by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the commercial deployment of advanced reactors that will use the fuel.

LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

Mid-Kansas Electric Company to Use Reciprocating Engines in New Power Plant
LCG, August 30, 2012--Mid-Kansas Electric Company LLC announced Monday that it will construct a 110-MW power plant that will consist of 12, natural gas-fired reciprocating engines. The estimated cost of the project is $130 million.
The use of natural gas-fired, reciprocating engines is becoming more popular in areas where renewable power generation is growing, as the reciprocating engines are a scalable means to provide flexible generating capacity to complement intermittent electricity produced by renewables.
The new facility, Rubart Station, will be the first installation of Caterpillar Power Generation Systems' new G20CM34 natural gas-fueled reciprocating engine generator sets. The new, 20-cylinder model expands on the 12 and 16 cylinder models, and the engines can generate up to 10 MW.
The project will include 12 engines that will provide flexibility to step up (or down) power generation from the plant by turning on one unit after another.
"Our members will see multiple advantages when Rubart Station comes to fruition," said the president and CEO of Mid-Kansas. "Along with being incorporated into our existing generation fleet to meet our growing load, this type of generation resource has a fast start capability, allowing for quick response to market conditions and our system?s growing integration of wind energy."
The project site is located east of Ulysses in Grant County, Kansas and was selected based upon proximity to adequate transmission, a competitive natural gas supply, and the need for voltage resources to support substantial load growth and wind generation in the area.
Project permitting activities have commenced, and construction is scheduled to begin early next year and completed by April 2014.
