EPA Extends Comment Period for Clean Power Plan

LCG, September 18, 2014-The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced Tuesday a 45-day extension of the public comment period for the Clean Power Plan, the EPA's proposed rule to limit CO2 emissions from existing coal-fired and gas-fired, combined cycle power plants. The mid-October deadline is now set for December 1, 2014. The EPA stated that it has already received over 3.5 million comments on the proposal. The schedule still includes a release of the final plan by June 2015.

The 45-day extension for the 600-plus page proposal issued on June 2 was applauded by many. Sierra Club Climate Policy Director stated, "The Sierra Club supports the EPA's effort to engage in additional conversations on the Clean Power Plan, the first-ever effort to curb carbon pollution from existing power plants. Already, the EPA has shown unprecedented outreach to engage with states, and extending the deadline will only allow for more comments and helpful input to be considered as the EPA finalizes the plan. We are pleased the EPA is still on schedule to release a final plan by the June 2015 deadline."

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) CEO stated, "These proposed regulations are some of the most complex and far-reaching ever written. Electric cooperatives welcome the extension of the comment period to allow for more analysis of their impact on affordability and reliability. This extension provides electric co-ops the opportunity to offer more informed and specific feedback to the agency before announcement of the final rule."

The agency has received more than 3.5 million comments on the proposal so far, McCabe said.
