LCG, April 29, 2025--Officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Texas Railroad Commission (RRC) signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) today outlining the state’s plans to administer programs related to carbon storage wells, known as Class VI wells. The MOA signing is a required step in the RRC’s application to be granted authority to permit Class VI wells in the state of Texas. EPA is currently preparing a proposed approval of RRC’s primacy application.

LCG, April 24, 2025--Exxon Mobil Corporation (ExxonMobil) announced yesterday an agreement with Calpine Corporation (Calpine) to transport and permanently store up to 2 million metric tons per annum (MTA) of CO2 from Calpine’s Baytown Energy Center, a natural gas-fired facility located near Houston, Texas. This is part of Calpine’s Baytown Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project that is designed to add CCS for the facility’s CO2 emissions. The Calpine facility could then provide a 24/7 supply of low-carbon electricity to the Texas grid plus steam to nearby industrial facilities.

DTE Announces Acquisition of Peaking Plant from LS Power
LCG, November 11, 2014-DTE Energy yesterday announced its plan to acquire the gas-fired, Renaissance Power Plant from The LS Power Group for $240 million. The plant, located in Carson City Michigan, is a simple-cycle facility with an electric generating capacity of 732 MW. DTE expects to complete the purchase during the first quarter of 2015.
The acquisition of the Renaissance Power Plant will provide DTE additional peaking capacity to support resource adequacy requirements and complement intermittent renewable resources. DTE Electric's President and Chief Operating Officer stated, "The purchase of Renaissance Power provides DTE customers with a safe, affordable, reliable and clean generation resource at a cost that is significantly below new build. Tightening supply markets for electricity in the region are expected to cause prices in the state and region to rise and become more volatile. This acquisition helps protect our customers from these dynamics."
The Renaissance Power Plant includes four Siemens-Westinghouse 501FD2 simple-cycle combustion turbines, which achieved commercial operation between 2002 and 2003.
