LCG, April 13, 2026--The EIA today released an "In-brief Analysis" of U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retirements in 2025. A highlight of the analysis is that, during 2025, the electric power sector retired 2.6 GW of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, which is (i) the least since 2010 and (ii) 5.9 GW less than the planned retirement of 8.5 GW at the beginning of 2025.

LCG, April 10, 2026--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday a rule proposing several revisions to the federal regulations governing the disposal of coal combustion residuals (CCR) and the beneficial use of CCR. The EPA designed the rule to encourage resource recovery, allow for site-specific considerations in permitting, and provide regulatory relief while continuing to protect human health and the environment. The EPA will be accepting comments on the rule for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, and it will also hold an online public hearing on the rule.

Southern Power Acquires Controlling Interest in California Solar Project
LCG, September 1, 2015--Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power yesterday announced the acquisition of a controlling interest (51 percent) in the 200-MW Tranquillity Solar Facility in California from Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. Recurrent Energy will retain the remaining interest in the project, which represents its first partnership with Southern Power.
The Tranquillity Solar Facility is scheduled to commence commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2016. The electricity and associated renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by the facility will be sold under a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to Southern California Edison. The project will support Southern California Edison???s efforts to meet the California Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) of 33 percent renewable energy by 2020 for Investor-Owned Utilities (IOUs).
Project construction began in July at the 1,900-acre site in Fresno County, California. The project includes the installation of over 800,000 polycrystalline photovoltaic (PV) solar modules that will be mounted on tracking tables. Signal Energy Constructors is managing the engineering, procurement and construction of the facility.

In April, Southern Power announced the acquisition of a controlling interest in the 32-MW Lost Hills-Blackwell Solar Facility in California from First Solar, Inc. Southern Power has announced, acquired or is constructing more than 1,300 MW of renewable ownership, including six solar projects in California.
