NextEra Energy and Google Collaborate on Accelerating Nuclear Power Deployment

LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

Southern Power Expands Its Renewable Portfolio with Wind Project Acquisition in Oklahoma

LCG, September 10, 2015-Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power yesterday announced an agreement to acquire the 151-MW Grant Wind facility in Oklahoma from Apex Clean Energy. The acquisition is expected to close in March 2016, when project construction is scheduled for completion.

Apex Clean Energy is managing the construction of the Grant Wind project, which began last month. The project plans include 66 wind turbines manufactured by Siemens. Apex will operate and maintain the facility once it achieves commercial operation.

Southern will sell the energy and associated renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by the Grant Wind project to Western Farmers Electric Cooperative, East Texas Electric Cooperative and Northeast Texas Electric Cooperative under 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs). Each company has contracted for approximately 50 MW and will have the option to either keep or sell the RECs.

Southern Company Chairman, President and CEO stated, "Southern Company is committed to the full portfolio and this project is an important step in further expanding our fuel mix. Our second wind project and one of Southern Power's more than 20 renewable projects across America, the Grant Wind facility is a smart investment that expands our company's presence in a region with exceptional wind resources."

Last March Southern Power announced an agreement to acquire its first wind project, the 299-MW Kay Wind facility in Oklahoma. This acquisition is also from Apex Clean Energy, and the deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Southern Power's renewable energy capacity is growing rapidly and, with the Grant Wind acquisition, is expected to exceed 1,600 MW, including 21 solar, wind and biomass facilities either announced, acquired or under construction.
