Southern Power and Recurrent Energy Complete 200-MW Solar Project in California

LCG, December 15, 2016--Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power and Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc., yesterday announced the commercial operation of the 200-MW Garland Solar Facility in California. Southern Power is the majority owner of the Garland Solar Facility. Recurrent Energy managed the development of the project and owns the remaining interest (49 percent).

Southern Power's President and CEO stated, "We are excited to see this facility help meet the energy needs of our wholesale customers. The Garland Solar Facility adds to our growing list of renewable achievements in 2016 and is an important piece of our solar portfolio."

Construction of the Garland facility began in November 2015 on 2,000 acres of land in Kern County, California. The facility uses approximately 723,000 Canadian Solar high performance CS6X-P photovoltaic (PV) solar modules mounted on single-axis tracking tables. Southern Power acquired controlling interest in the Garland solar PV project from Canadian Solar in December 2015.

The electricity and associated renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by the facility are being sold under two long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Southern California Edison (SCE), which will have the option to keep or sell the RECs.

The Garland Solar Facility will support SCE"s efforts to achieve its renewable energy goals. The State of California has a Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) that was established by legislation enacted in 2002. Subsequent amendments now set RPS requirements for California"s electric utilities, including SCE, to have 50 percent of their retail sales derived from eligible renewable energy resources in 2030 and all subsequent years. Interim RPS goals include 25 percent of retail sales by the end of this year.

In September 2016, Southern Power and Recurrent Energy announced that a similar project, the 200-MW Tranquility solar project, had begun delivering power to the grid in nearby Fresno County, which is north of the Garland Facility. Recurrent Energy developed the Tranquility project from start to finish on a 1,900-acre site. The construction began in July 2015 and required 14 months to complete. Southern Power acquired 51 percent of the Tranquility project from Canadian Solar in August 2015.
