New York Power Authority to Develop New Nuclear Facility in Upstate New York

LCG, June 23, 2025--The Governor of New York today directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop and construct an advanced nuclear power plant in upstate New York to deliver zero-emission power that supports a reliable and affordable electric grid. NYPA will lead the effort to develop at least one new nuclear energy facility with a combined capacity of at least one gigawatt (GW) of electricity, either alone or in partnership with private entities. The directive builds on the Governor’s 2025 State of the State to develop nuclear energy plans in New York.

Long Island Getting Juice from 18 Fuel Cells

LCG, Nov. 1, 2001--Fuel cell maker Plug Power Inc. said yesterday that 18 of its proton exchange membrane generators have been fully installed at a Babylon, N.Y., substation owned by New York State's Long Island Power Authority and are supplying power to the local transmission grid.

The 18 are part of a project that will eventually have 75 of the fuel cells hooked up, the company said. So far, 55 have been installed. The project is part of an initiative proposed by New York Gov. George Pataki as a way to promote new energy techniques and energy conservation projects.

According to Plug Power, the fuel cells could produce as much as one million kilowatt-hours of electricity over the duration of the program, which is enough electricity to power about 100 average-sized homes.

LIPA Chairman Richard M. Kessel said "Fuel cells are an environmentally friendly electric generating technology, and this project will help us develop a better understanding of how fuel cells can be integrated into our electric grid."

A fuel cell is a device that converts the energy of a fuel such as hydrogen, natural gas, methanol or gasoline and an oxidant which can simply be air into useable electricity through an electrochemical process from which no particulate matter is produced.

Locally, the fuel cells were well received. "The town of Babylon recognizes the need to look toward alternative fuel technologies as a way of supplying clean, efficient power for the future," said Babylon Town Councilman Steve Bellone.

The program is being funded through LIPA's Clean Energy Initiative, a five-year, $170 million program designed, in part, to foster the development and application of clean energy technologies, such as fuel cells, solar, wind generation and geothermal systems, Plug Power said.
