Indian Lenders Sue Enron's Dabhol Power
LCG, Nov. 8, 2001--Enron Corp.'s Dabhol Power Co. in western India yesterday canceled a meeting with four Indian lenders after the institutions filed a lawsuit against the U.S. energy company and three other parties demanding that work on the unfinished Dabhol power station be resumed.Enron was scheduled to begin two days of meetings today in Singapore with the lenders to discuss bids by two Indian companies to acquire a stake in the $2.9 billion Dabhol Power Co.Industrial Bank of India, Industrial Finance Corporation of India, State Bank of India and ICICI petitioned a Bombay court to demand that work on the power project in the western Indian state of Maharashtra be resumed to ensure adequate cash flows to the project and help its promoters make payments to the four financial institutions. The 740 megawatt Phase 1 of Dabhol had been producing power for nearly a year and the 2,144 megawatt Phase 2 was less than a month from completion when Enron shut down both last June, citing difficulty in getting paid for power generated by Dabhol. If work at Dabhol were resumed, the problem of getting paid would still exist. For that reason, the suit initiated by the four lenders also includes as defendants the government of India, the government of Maharashtra state and the Maharashtra State Electricity Board, which is Dabhol's sole customer. The Singapore meeting was to have addressed bids by two Indian companies, Tata Power and Bombay Suburban Electricity Supply, to acquire Enron's 65 percent stake in Dabhol. Enron has lowered its selling price from $1 billion to $850 billion.
