Jamaica Bay Energy Center Operational
LCG, July 7, 2003--New York's Long Island Power Authority will have an additional 54 megawatts of generating capacity from the Jamaica Bay Energy Center, developed by FPL Energy, LLC, the subsidiary of FPL Group. The generating unit will serve primarily during peak demand periods, and is located in the borough of Queens, New York. According to Long Island Power Authority chairman Richard M. Kessel, "Demand for electricity in the Rockaways has increased dramatically in recent years. FPL Energy's new Jamaica Bay Energy Center will help LIPA meet that ever-growing demand, especially as some very impotant local redevelopment projects come to fruition in the near future."The plant has dual-fuel capability, and like FPL's adjacent Bayswater Energy Center, will sell its output to the Long Island Power Authority under long-term contract.
