PJM Reports Resources Are Adequate to Meet Growing Summer Demand

LCG, May 7, 2026--PJM issued today its Summer Outlook 2026, which forecasts sufficient generation for typical peak demand this summer. PJM states that it is prepared to call on contracted demand response resources to reduce electricity use during times of high system stress.

NRC Approves Oklo's Principal Design Criteria Topical Report for Aurora Powerhouse

LCG, May 6, 2026--Oklo Inc. ("Oklo"), an advanced nuclear technology company, announced today that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved the Principal Design Criteria (PDC) topical report for the Aurora-INL (Idaho National Laboratory) nuclear small modular reactor (SMR), which is currently under construction in Idaho. The PDC topical report establishes a regulatory framework that defines the fundamental safety, reliability, and performance requirements to guide future reactor licensing and design activities, and the approved report should simplify future applications and reduce the need to re-review established material.

SRP Plans to Add 820 MW of Gas-fired Capacity to Deliver Reliable Electricity and Support Renewable Resource Growth

LCG, August 26, 2021--The Salt River Project (SRP) announced earlier this week plans to add 820 MW of generating capacity to a natural gas-fired facility, the Coolidge Generating Station, located in the Southeast Valley. The new, quick-start, capacity will serve the growing population and increasing commercial and industrial electricity load in the Phoenix area.

SRP is a not-for-profit, community-based utility and is seeking Board approval to expand the dispatchable capacity at the Coolidge Generating Station and add 16 natural gas-fired turbines capable of ramping up to full production within 10 minutes. The new units will support the integration of more intermittent renewable energy resources into the power grid.

SRP’s CEO and General Manager stated, “Expanding our Coolidge Generating Station is a critical step in creating a reliability backbone for SRP customers. The added, rapid-start capacity at Coolidge will keep the lights on during times of peak electricity demand in the Valley and help support the variable output from SRP’s growing portfolio of renewable resources.” Furthermore, he stated, “A highly reliable power system is absolutely critical in Arizona. Many Phoenix-based organizations serve critical community needs and at-risk populations rely on air conditioning during extreme heat. SRP must always keep these factors in mind as we grow our resource portfolio and move towards our goals to decarbonize.”

SRP’s commitments include reducing carbon intensity by more than 65 percent in 2035 and by 90 percent in 2050 from 2005 levels. SRP’s sustainability commitments also include an increased pledge to add 2,025 MW of utility-scale solar energy by 2025 and to add 1,600 MWh (400 MW) of battery storage by 2023. The additional peaking capacity provided by the proposed units at Coolidge Generating Station are not expected to significantly impact SRP's carbon intensity commitments, as the utilization or capacity factors of the new units would be relatively low.

SRP’s CEO and General Manager added, “SRP is proud of our early deployment of battery technology with one of the largest commitments in battery storage in the West. Expanding Coolidge Generating Station will provide a proven, quick-start generation resource while SRP obtains operational experience and evaluates the longer-term performance of battery storage technology. Our goal is to build and invest in more battery storage as it improves in reliability and cost.”
