TransAlta Begins Ontario 650 Megawatter

LCG, Nov. 6, 2000--Dan Newman, Environment Minister of Canada's Ontario province, provincial Energy, Science and Technology Minister Jim Wilson, mayor Mike Bradley of Sarnia, Ont., and Steve Snyder, president of TransAlta Corp., got four feet on one shovel Friday and turned over a clump of Ontario sod to mark the beginning of construction for a 650 megawatt cogeneration plant that will be Canada's largest.

"TransAlta is moving forward quickly on this project," Snyder said. "It will be the largest cogeneration plant in Canada and will add 650 MW to Southern Ontario's power market. That's enough power for a city with a population of 600,000 people."

Full commercial operation of the new plant is expected by October 2002. It will supply aspirin giant Bayer, Dow Chemical Canada Inc. and Nova Chemicals (Canada) Ltd. with power and steam. Excess power will be sold into competitive electricity markets, TransAlta said.

Wilson said "This means jobs for Ontario. It shows confidence in Ontario. And it's a clear indicationthat our government's progress in bringing competition to Ontario's electricity market is working, andmoving in the right direction."

Under the terms of the contract, TransAlta will build, own and operate a 440 megawatt cogeneration plant and acquire and operate existing utility plants representing 210 megawatts. The company said it plans to build its gas-fired generation by 500 megawatts per year, and to own andoperate 10,000 megawatts by 2002.
