California Municipals Urge Customers to Save Electricity

LCG, Feb. 8, 2001The Northern California Power Agency, which provides electricity to member municipal utilities in Northern California, said its members have asked their customers to step up electricity conservation efforts, even if they are not at risk of the rolling blackouts that threaten the rest of the state.

Every megawatt saved by the municipals is a megawatt that can be sold to the California Independent System Operator to keep lights on elsewhere.

The NCPA says the next round of blackouts could be the toughest yet. So far, rolling blackouts have only occurred in Northern California, and have affected only about 5 percent of the population. If power suppliers quit furnishing electricity to the state's investor-owned utilities or to Cal-ISO, things could get a lot worse, the agency said.

"As locally owned municipal power agencies, we are not part of the larger investor-ownedelectricity system that has been experiencing reliability and price difficulties," explained JohnFistolera, a spokesperson for the NCPA. "But just because we aren't experiencing the problemsdoesn't mean we can't be part of the solution."
