After Nuke Incidents, TEPCO Attempts to Reestablish Itself
LCG, October 15, 2002-The new president of Japanese company TEPCO has announced that all steps will be taken to recover public support, including delaying use of MOX fuel.In August, Japan's Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) was found to have falsified safety records for five of its nuclear reactors. Subsequently, several of its top officials were replaced, including now ex-President Nobuya Minami.TEPCO's new president, Tsunehisa Katsumata, announced that all possible steps would be taken to restore public confidence in the company. This process would involve postponing the recycling of nuclear material. The company intends to use plutonium-uranium mixed oxide (MOX) fuel, the nuclear waste from standard nuclear plants, but will put this plan on hold indefinitely.Japan's first major MOX-powered plant is expected to come on line in 2005.
