FPL Adds 600 Megawatts of Wind Power Nationally
LCG, Oct. 21, 2002--An announcement was issued by FPL Energy today detailing four wind projects it is developing in the Western, Midwestern, and Eastern United States.The New Mexico Wind Energy Center is expected to begin operation in 2003, with a maximum capacity of 204 megawatts. The Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) will purchase output produced by the center, located in the eastern part of the state.Northern California will be home to the High Winds Energy Center, with outut being sold to PacifiCorp Power Marketing, Inc. Operation of the 150-megawatt facility is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2003.Interstate Power and Light Company, a subsidiary of Alliant Energy Corporation, will purchase power from the Hancock County Wind Energy Center. The northern Iowa facility is expected to begin operating by the end of 2002, and will have a maximum capacity of 98 megawatts.A second project expected to start operating by the end of the current year is the Mountaineer Wind Energy Center, with a rating of 66 megawatts. The Mountaineer facility is sited in northern West Virginia.In addition to development at these wind farms, FPL Energy is planning an expansion at the Stateline Clean Energy Center, where maximum capacity will be increased by 37 megawatts, to 300 megawatts overall. It is also purchasing wind farms representing 123 megawatts of potential capacity from National Wind Power, in Texas and Pennsylvania.
