Arrowhead-Weston Transmission Project Clears Hurdle

LCG, January 27, 2005--Yesterday the Dane County Circuit Court affirmed the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin's final order approving the Arrowhead-Weston electric transmission line project. The Wisconsin Public Service Commission approved construction of the Arrowhead-Weston line in December 2003. Utilities, including Wisconsin Public Service Corp. and Minnesota Power, say the project is needed to improve grid reliability.

The Arrowhead-Weston 345-kV transmission line project will extend 220 miles between Hermantown and Wausau and is estimated to cost $420 million. The American Transmission Company (ATC) is the lead company developing the project and is currently working to obtain easements to use county-owned land in Washburn and Douglas counties. In Washburn County, the project crosses about 9.5 miles of county-owned land, and ATC claims that 2.5 miles of easements from Douglas County will also be necessary.

Project construction is nearly complete in Minnesota and is expected to begin in Clark and Marathon counties in the spring. The plan calls for completion of the project by 2008.
